Technical Note

We’ve received word that some readers are having difficulty loading up Prawfsblawg pages in the past week. The complaint is that the main page works fine, but the permalinks take forever to load up. This problem has been affecting at least two Prawfsblawg bloggers as well.

I don’t know the exact cause of the problem, but I’ve stumbled across what seems to be the solution: Clear your internet cache. (That is, in IE, go to Tools/Internet Options, and where it says “Temporary Internet Files” click “Delete Files.”) If our experience is any indication, taking that step should solve this annoying, recent technical problem.

Your front page also includes a lot of posts. This is another explanation for the problems some of your readers (including me) are having. If you went into your preferences and changed it so that, say, only 20 posts loaded on the front page, that would help.

Kaimi, you saved my blogging life. I have had the same problem all week pulling up posts from Conglomerate, too. I feel like I have my life back now. All that wasted time.

I’m not sure how TypePad works, but with MovableType, you can have archived pages generated dynamically, or static. If they are static, they load fast (but take up nominally more server space). If they are dynamic, they take up less space, but take longer to load, because they have to be generated on the fly.

I’m not sure which TypePad does, but you might look into that…
