Sex Disparities in Visiting Profs at Leiter’s Top 6 Schools

In this post, Brian Leiter provides a list of visiting professors at Yale, Harvard, Stanford, U. Chicago, Columbia, and NYU for the 2006-2007 academic year. Of these professors, 64 are men (76%), and 20 are women (24%). Here is a breakdown by school.

  • Yale: 9 men, 1 woman
  • Harvard: 21 men, 12 women
  • Stanford: 3 men, 2 women
  • U. Chicago: 8 men, 1 woman
  • Columbia: 8 men, 2 women
  • NYU: 15 men, 2 women

A discussion last year on the Leiter Reports about the potential for sex disparities in “look see” visits can be found here.

How does one go about becoming a visiting professor? Law schools do not post this information, so I am wondering what is the traditional route (if there is one) for securing one of these positions.
