Saturday Night’s All Right for Writing

At the risk of sounding hopelessly lame, here I am on a Saturday night, putting in footnotes to a book review (and now, perhaps even lamer, blogging about it). I had some social-type plans for today; but they kind of fell through. Being new to town, I figured I’d just take the opportunity to get ahead on some of my projects. But it does make me wonder – what was an assignment – either in practice, or as a prawf – that you had that made you feel especially lame? Some vague memories of working new year’s day on a brief, but I think I (mostly) blocked that out from my memory…

May I register a dissent here on the suggestion that writing on a Saturday night is an especially lame activity? First of all, Saturday night is so bridge and tunnel! Second, and more urgently, I often do Sabbath-like activities of rest from Fri night through Saturday late afternoon, so there are times when I literally can’t wait to attack the computer and spill forth. Those who don’t share such proclivities but are nonetheless engaged at the apex of the weekend by their sirens’ song should be valorized for their heroic rage against the night, sort of.

Once I was in a partner’s office and we needed to call a partner at another law firm about a deal. He made me pretend to be his secretary and make the call “Hello, this is Mr. Dork’s office calling for Mr. Big?”

This post reminds me of how, as a grad student at Northwestern, I used to love going to the library on Friday evenings, because I had the place all to myself.

In practice, I probably felt the most lame when I continued working on a client memo during a 3-day hiking trip. I had to have a redraft faxed to me, and the only fax machine near us still used long rolls of thermal paper — and this was not that long ago. Then I stayed up all night in our dark little motel room working on it. We had to leave the trail early so I could back to a fax machine to send in more edits.

Unless you’re a huge college football fan or hung over what could be wrong about working on New year’s day?
