Thanks to Dan & the Prawfsblog gang for inviting me to do a second round of blogging. This time, I’m providing my own pro-wrestling style audience chant (from an actual pro wrestling show), which can be accessed here. In my fantasies, this is playing outside my torts class on the first day of first year.
More seriously, I’ll try to provide the perspective of a somewhat more senior faculty member. What’s it like to be on the other side of the hiring table (beyond the occasional scarves you find)? I’m going on my first sabbatical next semester — what should profs try to get out of that experience? I’ve been fascinated by the posts that students make on some threads, and I would like to get into that a bit. And of course, newly invigorated by the Conference That Blogging Built and all the great papers I heard there, I’m likely to say something about labor and employment law.
Also, here’s a belated thanks to folks who gave me lots of good music suggestions at the end of my last stint. Along those lines, I will proudly bet that I am the only Chair of a law school appointments committee that, on the night of Nov. 3, in between two long days of interviews, went to see The Beautiful South play at the 9:30 club in D.C. A great show by a great English band that is sadly not well known in the U.S.

One day, I hope Supreme Court Justices come into Court with wrestling-style fireworks and music.
“On this bench, out of Harvard Law School, your Chief Justice, John “The Determinator” Roberts!”
That would make my life.

Miriam: They are very much around, it’s just that their albums don’t get released in the U.S.
Deborah: Dang, I wish I had mentioned the show when we met in DC. We’ll talk …
Scott: You’re just jealous that Hendrix never did a song with “Scott” in the title. Check out “Bazooka Joe” by the band Big Black sometime if you want really grim lyrics featuring my name.

Joe, that anthem of yours sure conveys exactly the sort of warm, welcoming attitude any school would want from its hiring chair. If you decide to rotate your theme music, can I suggest “Hey Joe” by Hendix? (” ‘Hey, Joe – where you going with that gun in your hand?’ ‘I’m going down to shoot my old lady – you know I caught her messing round with another man.’…”)

Had I known that they were playing, I would have been there too, with earplugs affixed to my infant’s ears.

Love the Beautiful South. Didn’t know they were still around!

Welcome Joe. That’s a mighty chant!
