The Obligatory Introductory Post

Greetings, Prawfs readers and fellow bloggers. I’m Brian Galle (rhymes with “dally”), a colleague of Dan’s at FSU, where I’ve been teaching and writing since August. Many thanks to the Prawfs crew for inviting me aboard, although I’ve been a long-time lurker and occasional commenter. This is a bit of reunion for me. Dan and I once jousted in practice debates at our alma mater, while Matt and I, we think, actually met on the field of battle a time or two. Erstwhile prawfer Kaimi Wenger sat next to me at our law school orientation, where he flaunted his ASU mug. Paul and I have dined together in the City of Angels. Prawfs alumna Bernie Meyler taught me a new word (“panopticon“) when we clerked together. Alum Trevor Morrison covered my memos in red ink at the Office of Legal Counsel. And Rick Garnett generously gave me interesting and thoughtful comments when I cold-e-mailed an article to his inbox back when I was in practice. And, of course, as Matt noted, there is documentary evidence on the web that I have been to at least one Prawfs happy hour.

So, in other words, legal academia, kind of a small world. This leads me to my first substantive comment. Since one of the things we seem to do here at prawfs is give advice to academic job seekers, here is a bit of it: be nice to everyone. For example, if I had known Dan would be my senior colleague one day, I would have let him win a couple of our practice debates.

In all honesty, though, I have no idea how I convinced anyone to give me one of these fantastic jobs, so I doubt my advice is worth much. While I’m here I’ll concentrate instead on trying to engage with my fantastic co-bloggers. Thus far my own writing has focused on “fiscal federalism” — that is, the study of the optimal disposition of taxing and spending powers among various levels of government and government partners. But basically I expect to blog here about whatever comes to mind, although Dan has urged me to keep the tax talk to a minimum.

Don’t hate on me. I gave little guidance of the sort to which BDG adverts. Honest…
