Happy Birthday!

Paul Caron, who, to many of the Pepsi generation of bloggers over here at Prawfs, is no doubt Coke, today qualified for membership in AARP. More on this topic over at Legal Profession Blog.

The most obscure generational media reference I think I could make would be to Clutch Cargo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clutch_Cargo), a cartoon that made its debut when I was four years old (March, 1959 – a month before my wife was born). In the animation, nothing moved but the mouths. But if you say “Clutch Cargo” to me, I immediately respond with his pals Spinner and Paddlefoot.

I am, however, familiar with Strongbad.

I knew I was getting old when Dawson’s Creek was cancelled and I no longer knew what soap opera-esque shows today’s 22 year-olds were watching….

What is worse, references to “Rockford Files” have missed the mark with my students. So, I moved forward with “Gilmore Girls” and “The Closer,” but to little effect….

Jeff, I have to say: “the Pepsi generation” is itself a pretty dated reference. Another tip: references to “Sky King” may miss the mark with your students (for the uninitiated: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_King)

That was delightful!

When I turned 50 the first birthday card I received was from AARP. My wife got a big laugh out of that (if only because she knows I can never afford to ‘retire,’ having only meager Social Security payments to look forward to).
