This thread is now closed. Please add comments to Thread Four.
This thread is for both law professors and people who are on the market this coming year for becoming a law professor. We invite those on the market and those who are prawfs to leave comments (anonymously if they prefer) regarding:
a) whether they have received a callback from a law school and/or accepted it and
b) whether they have received an offer from a law school and/or accepted it; feel free to also leave details about the offer or info about teaching loads, research leaves, etc.
Law professors may also choose to provide information that is relevant to the entry-level or the lateral market.
Bear in mind: if you don’t want your contact information displayed, please just enter in [email protected] or something like that as an email address.
We will continue our spreadsheet approach: All information should still come in through the comments. Our generous aggregator will continue to use a spreadsheet to aggregate the information (we have started a new spreadsheet for callbacks and offers, which appears below). As before, only the aggregator will be able to edit the spreadsheet, but when the aggregator edits the spreadsheet, those changes will be reflected in the embedded version below.
As always, please be patient with the aggregator, who will try to update this spreadsheet once a day, but may have a job, and perhaps may even be on the market.
The first thread is here; the second thread (where you can still get the AALS call spreadsheet) is here.

Hi, all — aggregator here. I’ll start keeping track of acceptances on the spreadsheet as well, if people start reporting the information. Please note that a school listed as “offer accepted” may have made more than one offer, and may still have some of those slots open. I’ll try to keep track of these (to the extent people let me know) all the way to the right, in the “offer notes” column.

Has Tulane offer been accepted?

Rec’d rejection via mail from NYU Lawyering program, for those of you wondering about fellowships.

Received a call-back invitation today by email from Ohio Northern.

when does the hiring process usually end? I am on a waiting list, waiting for other candidates to accept or refuse their offers, but can’t foresee how long I could wait since deadlines seem not very firm…
Posted by: anon | Jan 11, 2010 5:58:25 PM
I’m a non-VAP but I find the VAP progress interesting, especially as it indicates some applicants for tenure track positions will go off the market. I wish there were more posts about folks accepting offers. This is the big week for offers deadlines to expire.
Posted by: anon | Jan 11, 2010 4:14:54 PM
Chill out, people should be able to talk about VAP stuff here if they want. If you don’t care about the VAP stuff, then don’t read it!
Posted by: anon | Jan 11, 2010 4:06:40 PM
I agree, start another thread if you want to talk about VAP stuff.

Can we get back to tenure-track positions please? I’ve heard that a Golden Gate offer was accepted. Anyone know of any other acceptances?
Posted by: anonanon | Jan 11, 2010 3:54:27 PM
Which VAPs have made offers? Can people plz let us know. So far its Climenkos and LSU.
Posted by: the anon | Jan 11, 2010 1:20:26 PM
Climenko has made all of its offers.
Posted by: anon | Jan 11, 2010 11:04:08 AM
I’ve been rejected for VAPs at the top few schools–still haven’t heard from #’s 4-10.
Posted by: AnonCand | Jan 11, 2010 2:03:15 AM
I’ve applied to about 9. Penn sent me a letter via mail confirming receipt. Another school emailed saying they’ll be assessing their needs “later in the Winter.”
Posted by: anotheranon | Jan 10, 2010 7:40:11 PM
I have received a few acknowledgments from VAP/fellowship program–but the vast majority have not given me any response.
Posted by: anon | Jan 10, 2010 5:36:02 PM
I applied to 10 or 12 fellowship programs a couple years ago. Harvard was the only one that never even acknowledged my application.
Posted by: Anonity | Jan 10, 2010 8:29:06 AM
I applied to like 12 as of now and a few thanked me for sending them.
Posted by: [email protected] | Jan 9, 2010 9:13:13 PM
To other fellowship/ VAP applicants: I applied to about 10 programs and haven’t heard anything (not even acknowledgment of receipt of applications) from any school, including Climenko, other than the NYU Lawyering Program with whom I had a first interview. It feels like these applications are being swallowed by black holes. Would love to hear from others.

I disagree with Anon Prof 5:20 pm. Any Dean worth his salt will attempt to persuade you that tier 4 is the right place to be and then will do everything in his/her power to keep you at the school. I don’t think this would lower any other dean’s estimation of the school enough to affect rankings. In fact, it can only help as this Tier 4 school has pulled in talent that was pursued by a Tier 1 school.
If you prefer the Tier 1 school, as most would, you can just admit to Tier 4 that you made a terrible mistake & are unable to accept their offer. You would have loved to have worked there but you are going to accept the other offer.
Posted by: anon | Jan 9, 2010 6:09:28 AM
Has anyone heard from HLS regarding the Climenko program?
Posted by: anon | Jan 8, 2010 7:08:22 PM
Confused – Why don’t you call the dean of the school that you accepted the offer from and explain the situation, telling them you made the commitment to them in good faith and will honor your acceptance if they insist upon it, but that due to the changed circumstances you would like them to release you from the promise? You maintain your integrity this way and it’s quite likely that the dean will see the handwriting on the wall that you’re likely to lateral out in the near future and it would make more sense for them to give you the green light to depart now than to invest $ and faculty time assisting your development as a teacher and scholar only to have you move on before they get any real return.
Should original school refuse to release you, then you call top 50 dean, explain the situation (which lowers the stock of original school with a USN&WR voter) and say you feel honor bound to your commitment to original school, but you sincerely hope that top 50 will consider taking you on as a lateral hire in the near future. I don’t see how this can do anything but raise your reputation with top 50 – if they think you should have stiffed the lower rank school under these circumstances then that’s not a place you want to be either, and when you look for lateral options out of original school you can bypass them as well.
Posted by: Anon Prof | Jan 8, 2010 5:20:13 PM
I wouldn’t read too much into it. I had several schools request my transcripts & other official documents, so I assumed the school that didn’t request these things wasn’t interested in me. They ended up giving me an offer without requesting any additional info. Every school has a different approach.
Posted by: anon | Jan 8, 2010 4:08:28 PM
Question: I had a callback with a school, and my impression is that I did reasonably well during the job talk etc. The school, however, has not yet called my references. Should I take this to mean the school is not interested, or is it possible that (1) some schools just don’t bother to call references before making offers and/or (2) schools will wait to call an applicant’s references until that applicant is “on deck” due to an A-lister’s rejection (i.e., my impression is that references for the top several candidates are usually called in a single December swoop so that Deans could more quickly make successive offers in the event of January rejections)?

Posted by: Anon | Jan 8, 2010 10:35:34 AM
Confused,
We are talking about your career, so I think you get to act a little selfishly. Which school do you think will make you happier, more fulfilled, etc.? Forget about the rankings (unless that is the most important thing to you). While “unaccepting” wouldn’t build you any social capital, I don’t think that the academy in general would question that decision. Remember that it is still early. Game isn’t over for the 4th tier school — they will hire someone else that will work out just fine. Just make the decision that is best for you!
Posted by: anon | Jan 8, 2010 9:51:59 AM
That is incredibly tough. Is there any chance you have a spouse that is really unhappy with your decision to accept with the tier 4 school?
Posted by: anon | Jan 7, 2010 5:35:44 PM
This might not be the right forum but I had three callbacks after the conference a top 50 school, a top 100 school, and a 4th tier school. I did call backs in that order. I got a quick ding from the top 100 school and an offer from the 4 tier school and silence from the top school. Once I received my offer from a 4-tier school, I called the top 50 schools to let them know that I had another offer. The chair was very nice but said that because of budgetary issues they weren’t quite sure if they would actually be able to hire two people and that my subject area wasn’t their first priority. Given that conversation, I accepted the position with the 4 tier school on Monday (their deadline). The dean of the top 50 school called me on Wednesday and offered me a job.
Clearly, it would be bad form for me to “unaccept.” My question is does anyone know of instances when this has been done? I don’t like to burn bridges, and I fear damaging my reputation. At the same time, I know it is quite hard to jump from a 4tier school to a top 50 school so this could realistically be my only chance.
Any advice would be appreciated. My gut tells me that I have to do the honorable thing and that is to turn down the 50 school.

I know of a Pepperdine offer accepted. Scholarship of the prof is in national security law. I don’t understand what you are talking about on the tenure issue. It seemed like a great place to work to me, so long as you fit with the school’s mission.

It’s too bad that people like Anon|Jan 7, 2010 9:53:14 AM post to this site. One would hope that s/he would keep silent rather than posting remarkably wrong and misleading information.

I know of an offer at Miami (in Crim Law I believe)

Anon @ 8:42, Don’t listen to Anon | Jan 7, 2010 9:53:14 AM, s/he is someone who wishes you ill and wants to knock out any possible competition, and we can only wish that the person will come to a bad end in this process.
The game is not nearly over. There is still at least a month and a half of hiring to go, and some schools will continue hiring entry levels into April.
Call the five schools if you have a deadline from the nontenure opportunity. If you don’t have a deadline, only call when you have new information (e.g. you completed a new article, you started a new article, your previous article has been cited, etc.), and then matter of factly ask what’s going on with your candidacy. Be cool, don’t act out of desperation, but find out the information you need to move ahead with your plans.

Any news on Pepperdine? I heard they made a couple offers but given their unusual tenure expectations someone might not accept.
Posted by: anon | Jan 7, 2010 3:25:32 PM
Any news from Loyola L.A.? I have heard that they have made 3 offers, but that the candidates have not yet accepted…

Anybody hear anything about Western New England? Callbacks? Offers? Budget issues?
Posted by: anon | Jan 7, 2010 2:45:03 PM
Apparently American has filled all four positions at this point.

Has anyone got any intel on where things stand at Miami? Aside from the one report of a rejection email, there has been no word on here as to either call-backs or offers. Thanks.

I think everyone should bear in mind that some schools still haven’t reconvened (officially), and many profs are at the AALS in LANO today.
Posted by: anon | Jan 7, 2010 10:23:23 AM
Just email the schools you are interested in. Any decent school will let you know where you stand. I did it and received much piece of mind.

Anon @ 8:42 — game is over.
Posted by: Anon | Jan 7, 2010 9:53:14 AM
I had 6 interviews at AALS, one callback which I turned down due to personal reasons, and have heard NOTHING from the other 5 schools. None of those 5 schools have been reported as making offers and only a few of them reported callbacks. I have another (non-tenure track) job opportunity. Do I assume game is over and take this other opportunity? Can I contact the schools I have heard nothing about? Has anyone received or heard of callbacks of offers that are not posted here? If the game is really over, a simple email to the hiring chair won’t really make a difference, right?
Posted by: anon | Jan 7, 2010 8:42:10 AM
The school with the budgetary concerns, is that an East Coast school?
Posted by: anony | Jan 6, 2010 10:42:50 PM

very interesting ! thank you anon | Jan 6, 2010 1:09:30 PM !
Posted by: anon | Jan 6, 2010 1:15:00 PM
Tales of a second wind in the hiring process were correct. I received two calls this week from schools that I interviewed with at AALS who asked if I could come for a callback. I’m under the impression that one of them already conducted callbacks and made offers (which presumably were turned down), but the other hasn’t done callbacks yet because of now-resolved budgetary concerns. So this ain’t over yet!
Posted by: anon | Jan 6, 2010 1:09:30 PM
Not sure if this was posted already, but…
…I hear that South Texas has made LRW, and perhaps clinical, offer(s).
Posted by: anon | Jan 5, 2010 12:04:15 PM
After being dinged for a position where I was repeatedly told I would be a great fit, etc., etc., I realized with great clarity that there are always, or almost always, other candidates hearing exactly the same thing for the same position and that it means NOTHING until you get the offer–other than you are being considered for the position.
Posted by: anon | Jan 4, 2010 5:12:58 PM
FYI, LSU interviewed me twice for the aforementioned fellowship. During the second “call back” interview everything went great and at the end they told me I would be great for the position; I was promptly dinged two days later. They say they’ve now filled both fellowship slots for next year.

Anon 11:35:26 PM:
“Top 30” sounds like possibly UT and Illinois. It might help others to know the schools your talking about.
Posted by: anon | Jan 4, 2010 10:12:50 AM
I will soon be taking my family to visit a school where I received an offer. What is the appropriate attire to wear during a dinner with faculty?
Posted by: anon | Jan 4, 2010 9:49:29 AM
Correction-that was Louisiana State Univ (LSU, not LSA).
Posted by: anon | Jan 4, 2010 9:48:08 AM
LSA invited me to interview for a fellowship/VAP at AALS (can’t remember which one). I told them I was only looking for an assistant professor position but I assume they interviewed others for the position.
Posted by: anon | Jan 4, 2010 9:30:55 AM
When were the deadlines for the applications you submitted?
Posted by: anon | Jan 4, 2010 12:45:23 AM
Has anyone had many fellowship/VAP interviews yet? I have had two interviews so far, with well ranked schools (top 30), but haven’t heard from anyone else. Are most of the programs waiting until later? I applied to about 15 programs, most of which were ranked much lower. No offers and no word from the other 13 schools.
