Professor Stuntz had a profound effect on my legal education. I took two courses from him at UVA, and later modeled my Federal Criminal Law course at WVU on his. As so many have noted, he was a deeply decent person. I vividly recall his final class session when he asked us not to clap (a school tradition) so that he could depart with some dignity, eschewing his colleagues’ tendecy to — and I quote — “bound, gazelle-like, from the classroom to great fanfare.”

I met him at his son’s wedding. He was genuine, kind, and generous. I knew him for five minutes, but he made a lasting impression.

I had him for three classes as a student. He was a phenomenal teacher and mentor. Although I knew this was coming, I’m still incredibly saddened it finally happened.
