The following is the breakdown for yesterday’s vote on the Manchin-Toomey amendment proposing background checks for gun purchases (S. Vote 97):

States where both senators voted “Yes”: 21

  • Total population for those states: 156 million

States where senators split: 12

  • Total population for those states: 76 million

States where both senators voted “No”: 17

  • Total population for those states: 80 million

Inferring that this implies the majority of Americans support the bill is the reverse of the error of the Electoral College.
