Space X=X(Space Law)

The gigantic IPO should trigger a revival of space law. For decades space law was seen as a novelty or a punch line. But that can’t be true for much longer. The regulatory framework for space was developed during the Cold War and is woefully out-of-date.

To take an example, under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, national governments are liable for all space harms inflicted by their nationals. This means (I think) that American taxpayers are on the hook if a Space X satellite fell out of orbit and crashed in, say, Paris. The assumption (I guess) was that all satellites would be government owned or launched. A reasonable idea 60 years ago. Not now.
