Studies show not only that students who do not use computers get better grades, but that students who do not use computers in classes in which other students DO use computers do not enjoy the same higher grades. Sitting next to someone who is on a computer is distracting, just as if you were on the computer itself.
I’ve never allowed computers in my classes, and my evaluations invariably reflect that students recognize the advantage of the no-computer policy.
